A Spontaneous Trip to Mahabalipuram

Sometimes the best trips are the ones that aren’t planned at all — and our Mahabalipuram trip was exactly that! It all started with a Sunday morning call from Vinod asking, “How about a quick beach trip?” There was no plan, no packing — just excitement! We quickly checked a few options and decided to go towards the East Coast since the West Coast had heavy rain alerts. We first thought of Pondicherry but then finalized Mahabalipuram — a perfect mix of beaches, temples, and good vibes.

We began searching for beach resorts and found plenty of options along the East Coast Road (ECR). Luckily, we got a room at Coral Beach Resort, just about 3 km from the town center. Early in the morning, we started from Bengaluru, taking the Hosur–Gingee route — a scenic single-lane road that made the drive enjoyable. We reached Mahabalipuram in about six and a half hours.

After checking into the resort, we decided to keep the day simple — just relax by the beach and pool. The sound of the waves, the salty breeze, and the laid-back mood made it a perfect start to our getaway.

The next morning, we woke up early, hoping to catch the sunrise — but the rain had other plans! After breakfast, we explored the famous Shore Temple and Tiger Cave, two must-visit spots in Mahabalipuram. Later, we returned to the resort to unwind.

Since the trip was so refreshing, we decided to extend our stay by one more day. We shifted to another resort, Landmark Resort, just a few kilometers away, and spent the day visiting other UNESCO World Heritage temples around the town.

On the last day, the weather finally gave us a break — a cloudy morning with a beautiful pink sunrise by the beach. I managed to capture some amazing photos that made the early wake-up totally worth it.

What started as a random idea turned into a beautiful, memorable trip. This unplanned Mahabalipuram getaway not only gave us a much-needed break but also helped us tick off a few places from our bucket list.

Stay tuned — I’ll be sharing more about the stunning UNESCO temples of Mahabalipuram in upcoming posts!
