A Peaceful visit to Sri Janardana & Mahakali Temple, Ambalpady

While returning to Bengaluru, we made a calm and spiritual stop at the Sri Janardana & Mahakali Temple located in Ambalpady, Udupi. This ancient temple is not just a place of worship, but also an important cultural and religious center of coastal Karnataka 🌴.

The Sri Janardana Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Janardana, with the Mahakali Temple located beside it. In front of the temple is the sacred Janardana Pushkarani (temple pond), which adds to the serene atmosphere 🪷.

Within the temple complex, you can also see:

  • 🐒 Anjaneya (Hanuman) Temple, with an idol showing the incarnations of Mukhyaprana
  • 🌿 Brindavana of Sri Raghavendra Tirtha

Over the years, this temple has grown into a significant spiritual and cultural hub in the Udupi region.

Location & Distance

  • From Udupi Bus Stand: Around 3 km
  • From Bengaluru: Approximately 400 km

Ambalpady is perfectly located between two sacred landmarks:

  • 🛕 Udupi Sri Krishna Temple to the east
  • 🌊 The holy beach to the west, where Madhvacharya received the idol of Lord Krishna

Interestingly, while Lord Krishna faces west in UdupiLord Janardana here faces east. It is believed that if you draw a straight line westward from the Udupi Krishna Temple, it leads directly to the Ambalpady Janardana Temple.

The name Ambalpady comes from “Ammana Padi”, meaning “the woods of Amma (Goddess)” 🌺.
It is believed that Goddess Mahakali was originally worshipped in the form of a sacred stone. Even today, this same stone is worshipped along with a wooden idol of Mahakali, preserving centuries-old traditions and beliefs.

Temple Timings:
🕉️ Morning: Around 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM
🕯️ Evening: Around 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant 🌸. Early mornings and evenings are especially peaceful and ideal for darshan.

Our visit to the Sri Janardana & Mahakali Temple was a beautiful and calming experience. The spiritual energy, rich history, and quiet surroundings made it a perfect stop on our journey back to Bengaluru 🚗💫.

If you are visiting Udupi or passing through, this temple is definitely worth a visit 🙏✨.
